A question we get asked a lot by founders or entrepreneurs is “Should I do my own PR?”
The answer is simple – yes, you must do your PR because it is business critical. Knowing who your audiences are, what those messages are for your audiences and, crucially, the story you are going to tell is absolutely essential to the success of your business.
You cannot delegate this. There’s no waving a magic wand and hoping somebody else can fix it for you. Think about it… who knows your business as well as you? Who has your passion? Who loves your product as much as you? No one. It has to be you!
So own your PR and become a great storyteller.
Now I’m going to ask a question back to you: how do you know your PR work is right for you if you don’t know how to do it yourself?
Okay, so you have money to burn, you’ve got your next round of funding and everyone is saying you should work with a PR agency. But how do you know that what they suggest is right for your business? Will that pop-up event for journalists really bring a return or will it leave it you out of pocket? Will all your product samples that they tell you to send out to a ‘warm list’ of contacts really be seen or will they just go in the bin?
If you don’t understand PR from first principles you’re an uneducated consumer. And that’s dangerous. If you did your accounts without understanding the basics then you’d be in serious trouble, and the same goes for PR.
The process to do PR is actually a step by step formula. There are certain criteria that make a story newsworthy and this can be learnt. So take a course and learn how the PR formula works.

What unites all the greatest entrepreneurs in the world? They are all great storytellers! And who’s at the heart of those stories? Yes, you guessed it… they are! But startups have stories, they aren’t stiff corporate organisations which can’t make a move without checking with their legal advisors. Startups are disrupters, they’ve seen a gap in the market or something that needs to change the market and they are taking brave new steps. And that makes for an interesting story.
So throw that modesty out of the window and be the star of your story.
When you take control of your PR it exponentially strengthens your position because you can be targeted. Gone are the scatter bomb approaches, you know the media that you want to be featured in and what story you should share for greatest impact. Everything you do is coordinated, prioritised in line with your business objectives. No one else has your vision, not at this early stage anyway. You need to take hold of your PR and steer your ship in the direction that you need to go.
